We've been back to see Koby the Setter in South Shields for his third session. Koby is rescued from a foreign country, and we don't really know the history. He has a hell of a lot of drive and really wants to hunt. He wants to hunt birds, and he points very, very well. He's destined to be a gundog, so one of the first things we've done is to give him some gundog tasks and also recommended that he attend gundog sessions, which he attended his first one a couple of weeks ago, where he did exceptionally well.
This is something that comes naturally to him, and until those needs are met, we are going to struggle with teaching him to relax when he's outside. So he started doing his gundog training, and now we are turning our attention to the issue that I was up to go in for, which is his pulling on the lead and his freezing when he's outside. Basically, he would drag on the lead. If his owner would stop and try to turn him to bring him back or do any sort of training with him, he would freeze. He would put the brakes on, and he would just refuse to move and he would stand there all day if she let him.
We've been working on some engagement games and we've been working on his loose-leash walking. Initially, the food and any pressure that was put on him to do training was completely poisoned. As soon as they started trying to do any sort of training with him, it wasn't just him being given the piece of food; anything that he had to do to work for that piece of food, he would just freeze and refuse to do anything. Now, we've got him doing all sorts of tricks, we've got him doing loose-leash walking, and now we just need to grow those behaviours so that he can go further outside the house in a nice loose-leash walking position without dragging his owners around.
Koby has done fantastic, and he will go far, so well done Koby and Co.
