Albus the Pointer x Great Dane has been working with our trainer Brenna to disengage from other dogs at a distance. He would tend to fixate and whine in frustration that he couldn't meet them. Albus's owner was also worried that she wouldn't be able to recall him away from other dogs when off-lead.
Over 3 sessions we worked on disengaging from dogs by saying "yes" and feeding him a treat. This has quickly become a habit for him and he can do this without being asked. We also introduced the recall cue "come" and made it exciting by adding movement.
Today we trialled all of Albus's hard work by using Brenna's dog, Clipper, as a stooge. They started at a distance, and when Albus struggled to disengage, Clipper moved away. We practiced this until they could have a relaxed meet and greet! Albus was then regularly recalled away from Clipper with great success.
Well done!
