Have you ever noticed that anxiety can spread? It starts with one thing, then moves onto something similar then onto something else similar and then all of a sudden, you have some extreme anxiety? Well this is what happened to Effy the border collie from Newcastle.
Effy is pretty reactive to anything that moves, makes a noise and terrified of getting in the car. Even the smoke alarm running out of batteries and beeping has had her a mess for a few weeks - long after the event. She won’t go upstairs if the doors open where the vacuum cleaner lives and she creates drama when the guardians try to relax and watch TV. She’s terrified of the harness, up until recently would hide at the sight of the lead and lies down on walks and won’t budge (tries to bite if forcefully moved) when it’s time to leave.
Effys guardians have done fantastic and reduced a lot of the behavior issues since the last session we had. She will now get her lead on an go for walks, they’ve had no resource guarding issues and Effy is letting them touch her now! These are huge strides. Effy has also been on a pain medication trial to see if that improved anything to rule out underlining pain.
Here is what we did this session:
Agreed to have a solid routine for Effy so that she knows the score and what’s happening.
Taught her to put her head through her harness on her own.
Started building focus outside the house and around the car.
Started counter-conditioning to people and dogs.
Came up with a plan to stop her from creating havoc when the guardians try to relax and watch TV.
There are loads to do with Effy, and she’s already made some HUGE improvements.
Personally, I love her, she’s my type of crazy border collie
Keep watch for more updates on Effy soon!
