We often talk about socialization, meeting other dogs and people. However, that is not the full extent of socialization.
Take dog-dog interactions for example. A well socialized dog with being able to behave appropriately in 3 situations:
1. To be able to engage appropriately with dogs off lead
2. To be able to appropriately greet a dog on a lead (using the 5 step greeting pattern)
3. To ignore a dog when there is no opportunity for interaction.
Chilli and Bella, have an unbalanced view of other dogs. So they can play off lead, however can’t ignore them while on lead and runs off to them off the lead.
They’re pretty well-trained dogs, definitely above average per dog. Chilli, for example, has his gold kennel club good citizens award.
We can use these foundations to build interactions outside with their owner, then add in other dogs as distractions and desensitize them. We can also use counter conditioning to change their response to other dogs.
Their task for the next couple of weeks is to build engagement on walks and focus on their loose leash walking.
Both dogs are lush, and it was very difficult to not interact with them - bloody COVID
