Getting that perfect loose leash walking

Nathan Here

Last week we went to see Barney, the Portuguese Water Dog - quite a rare breed over here. Barney is very friendly with people but doesn't really like other dogs in his space, which is pretty typical of a water dog.

This was our second session in Sunderland, on the first session Barney would bark at other dogs from quite far away and pulled on the lead quite a bit as well.

Since the first session, Barney has been perfect - he's stopped reacting at other dogs almost completely, stopped pulling on the lead as well, and now has got a very nice loose leash walk that isn't reliant on many treats. Barney earns his breakfast in the morning doing some loose leash walking and he's just done super well. In this session, we walked down the seafront at Seaburn and saw loads of dogs and he didn't bat an eyelid at any of them, he did perfectly.

Next, we're going to look at this loose leash walking when the kids are out. Barney struggles a little bit when he's watching the kids running around and playing, he wants to jump up and get involved and just doesn’t always go the best way about it so in the future sessions we're going to look at that as well.
