We recently went back to see Harvey the Red Fox lab in South Shields.
Harvey is just terrified of the outdoors, and it’s really sad to see how he really struggled with other dogs, people, noises, and movement in general.
He’s slowly getting there, he was a lot more comfortable while he was out this time and even showed some interest in another dog.
He is sniffing more and checking in more.
There are a few things we need to do with Harvey:
1. Tap into his ‘Seeking’ part of the brain by getting him doing activities while out. This will help release all those positive hormones and neurotransmitters. This should help him enjoy the outdoors more and allow his owners to distract him if needed.
2. Systematic desensitization and exposure. This is where he is gradually introduced to new areas on his own terms and at his own pace.
Harvey is certainly not an easy dog, but he is already making some great strides in his training
Well done Harvey and co!
