Next, we went to see Milo and Daisy, the lovely little Jack Russells. Milo and Daisy are very, very hyper dogs. They have a lot of work and drive, chase things, and are very interested in learning and training. They are just generally great to work with.
Soon, they will be moving house, and their human mother is moving in with her partner, so we are getting the dogs prepared for that. Today, we looked at some recall issues, where if they are sniffing or doing anything else, they have no urgency to come back to the owner and will keep sniffing and not come back.
We used a few different techniques, mainly relying on our runaway recall, where you call the dog, run away from them, and then have a bit of a party when they catch up. This worked extremely well for Milo. Daisy, however, would chase and catch up, but then would go straight into sniffing, rather than doing a proper check-in. So, we did zigzag running and a lot of loops, building up the drive for Daisy to get back to the owner by making it more difficult for her to get back.
Eventually, she had a lot of drive and wanted to get back to the owner, and it became a really exciting, fun game for her. By the end of the session, they both did very good recall. We then looked at loose leash walking and off-leash walking, which they both did extremely well at, walking all the way back without pulling on the lead and looking for treats.
Well done, Milo and Daisy.
