"My puppy won't go to the toilet in the rain"

I have had a few messages about this so far this week, so I thought I would do a quick post around this topic.

Socialization covers EVERYTHING. Our dogs will never acknowledge somethings, whereas others will be weird and unique to them, how they perceive these events will determine their future behavior.

When it comes to bad weather, a lot of puppies won't go to the toilet outside, and this can set your toilet training right back!

So here are some tips:

1. Go outside with them!

Go for a short walk (even just a couple of minutes) and let them sniff and do what they want to.

2. Make the rain super fun!

When it starts raining, go outside and retrain a trick they love, such as middle. Act as they have never learned this before and start from scratch, have a party when they do it!

3. Some dogs may prefer a coat or even being under an umbrella.

4. Take it slow

Allow them to move at their own pace and investigate. Rain means new smells, sounds, sights and sensations.

5. Add a "go toilet" cue.

Say the words "go toilet" just as they are about to go and then mark, praise, and reward by scattering some awesome food around the floor when they are finished.

6. Don't skip walks because of the rain!

As mentioned above, different weather conditions are all part of socialization.

7. Be patient!

It will happen, we just need to help our dogs get there in the meantime
