Yesterday we called to see Stafik, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, from South Shields for his first session. Stafik is an incredibly lovely dog who adores the people he knows. However, he's been having some issues with other dogs, barking and lunging at them when he spots them on the street. He's also snapped at a few people.
It appears that some of these problems may have arisen from past health issues and uncomfortable vet visits. This has made him a tad anxious around people reaching out to touch him.
Today, we observed his behaviour to identify his triggers and initiated the counter-conditioning process. We introduced a cue that signifies something positive whenever he sees another dog, aiming to change his perception.
We also played a counting game to help him focus better when around other dogs, and he excelled. Stafik showed great progress, disengaging from me and the other dog, demonstrating his understanding of what we were trying to achieve.
Stafik did really well during this session and will do just fine with other dogs and people in the near future. Well done to him and his owner for seeking help! Can't wait to see their progress. Also, his owners have already left a glowing review along with a photo of Stafik – check it out below!
