On Wednesday our Trainer Brenna went to visit 1-year-old German Shepherd Jax, to help with his over-excited play. When he wants attention or a game, he'll often jump, mouth, and bite at his owner's clothes and hair. We had to give him a way to receive the affection and play he is asking for but in a much safer way.
Now Jax only gets tactile attention when he is sitting or lying down. It sounds simple enough - but when his dad first walks through the door at the end of the day Jax's excitement takes over, so he will find it harder to control his impulses and perform the desired behavior. It takes lots of practice and patience before it becomes a habit!
We also wanted to give Jax a way to ask for toy play. We wanted to 'shape' Jax to an object that, when he interacts with it, triggers his dad to throw a ball. It's just a dinner plate, but to Jax, it's a way for him to ask for play in a controlled way. He is quickly getting the hang of this game as you can see here!
